Cherepanova, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics in the Ural State University, gave a lecture from Munich and told students about what they needed to build a successful career abroad and about her study in London Business School
Professors of the International Economics and Management Department invited Julia Cherepanova to give an online lecture to students of the International Management program. Julia graduated the University in 2005, has built a successful career and now she continues to work in Germany.
First of all, Julia noted that she had liked to study in the university and she remembered with great warmth her student years. However, besides education, modern employers, especially if we say about working abroad, appreciate employees who have developed emotional intelligence and strong communication skills, so called soft skills. The graduate stressed it was soft skills that helped her to move up the career ladder and negotiated successfully with corporate partners. After graduation Julia got a job in Expert Ural magazine, and then she went to work for EY which is included in the Big Four accounting companies. For several years, she went from working in the Ekaterinburg branch of EY to moving to Germany and working in its German branch.
Julia told the students about her career turning point. She completed the London Business School MBA after which she decided to develop in the field of strategic management where she made great strides again.
“Of course, LBS is a strong organization where social connections and coworking play an important part. But as it turned out, even such super stimulating environment can’t make people cooperate with each other. Not all my fellow students were eager to develop in this direction.
During studying I made a lot of useful professional acquaintances. Mentors and coaches played an important role in my future development and success. It is those people who support and accompany students throughout the study in LBS”, says Julia.
Julia dedicated the part of the lecture to the overview of the book by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, Designing your life: building a life that works for you. She shared how she used some exercises and tips from the book and told how this influenced the development of her career and life scenarios.
The students were inspired by career successes of the former student of UrFU. They actively asked questions trying to learn as much as possible and thanked Julia for her time and sharing her experience with them.
Answering the question about the significance of ACCA certificates, Julia said:
“ACCA certificates are definitely important and even must-have if you want to work in companies included in the Big Four, investment funds or wish to build a career in finance”.
Now Julia Cherepanova works in the German investment fund founded by her former LBS fellow students. At the end of the lecture she invited the students to do an internship in this German fund.
“I’m confident that this teleconference was very useful for our students. Julia has shared the most valuable experience, told about skills which are relevant today for working abroad in finance. Students had the opportunity to get answers to questions which can help them to adjust their personal development trajectory”, notes Liudmila Ruzhanskaya, Prof., Doctor of Economics, Head of International and Corporate Management program, Head of the Academic Department of International Economics and Management.
