International Online Summer Intensive on econometrics is accomplished

28 faculty members and researchers from 16 countries participated in this School

From July 20 to 30, the first International Summer School on “Advanced Econometrics: Theory and Application” was held at Graduate School of Economics and Management UrFU. About 28 faculty members and researchers from at least sixteen countries participated in this School (e.g. Australia, Russia, China, Chile, Portugal, Pakistan, Italy, Bangladesh, Croatia, Turkey, India, Malaysia and others).

The summer school content comprises several cutting-edge econometric techniques for analyzing micro, time series and panel data. The academic leader, Dr Kazi Sohag, taught several sophisticated methods, including, Quartile-Autoregressive, Quantile ARDL, Quantile-on-Quantile, CS-ARDL, CS-DL, DCCE-GMM, Global VAR, DDD and others. Besides, Kristina Chukavina and Andrey Pushkarev, course facilitators, highlighted Difference-in Difference, Propensity Score Matching, Structural Equation Modelling and other methods.

The academic leader and facilitators explained the economic theory, practical simulation procedures and interpretation of each method comprehensively. All the participants had access to avail course materials, software and videos to the Moodle system. The School utilized R-Studio, Stata and Matlab packages.

The participants of this course provided very positive feedback about the Summer School. They highly appreciated the content and the professionalism of the Academic leader and Facilitators. For example, Ivana Tomas Žiković, Head of Department of Quantitative Economics at the University of Rijeka, mentioned that the Summer School is one of the best schools she ever attended. She added:

“At first, I was skeptical of the course curriculum, which covers so many different and complex techniques in a relatively short time. However, now I see that this is the main advantage of the course, as it is the first to provide insight into more than one specific econometric technique. All lectures were excellent, providing insight into some of the most advanced cutting-edge econometric techniques.”

Some of the GSEM professors and PhD candidates also participated in the Summer School. They believe that implementing modern econometric methods and explaining them to students will elevate the teaching quality to a higher level. These topics are especially important for traditionally strong economic programmes of GSEM, such as PhD in Economics, Applied and International Economics, BA International Economics and Business and other. Undergraduates and graduate students also expressed their views about the School.

“We got a unique opportunity to attend this School to acquire a very advanced knowledge of econometrics those will facilitate us to accomplish our diplomas and publish them in decent journals.  Knowing those methods will make us confident in research while we are still bachelor and masters students”

The successful accomplishment of the first Summer School on Advanced Econometric Techniques inspired GSEM to establish it as an annual event, which will eventually create an excellent platform to disseminate the analytical skills to the various stakeholders.
