In 2021, GSEM UrFU students became the authors of 19 articles indexed in international databases
The past year has been very fruitful for student research activity at Graduate School of Economics and Management UrFU. In September, 55 students of the School immediately received an increased scholarship for achievements in research activities, and a little later, a record number - 17 students of GSEM UrFU received a Governor's scholarship. The year was also a record year in terms of the number of student publications indexed in Scopus/WoS – there are already 19 of them.
“This number is likely to increase as many students have published in conference proceedings scheduled for indexing. But it is important to note that more and more often our students are published not only in conference proceedings, but also in indexed scientific journals and even in journals of the first quartiles according to JCR or SNIP, which are important in the context of UrFU’s participation in the Priority 2030 program,” said Director of GSEM Center for research support Dmitry Gladyrev.
The year 2021 has been a very productive for Anna Gainetdinova, second-year student of master degree programme “Applied and International Economics”. With her participation, three articles were published at once, indexed in international databases, two of them in scientific journals. The first publication was in Economics of Region (Scopus, WoS, Q1 SNIP).
“I did a lot of science in my bachelor's degree, but before that I didn't think about publishing in international scientific journals. It seemed to me that this was something unattainable. The turning point was the writing of the bachelor’s thesis; I was interested in working on it, and my supervisor Igor Drapkin suggested to write an article based on its results. This is how the publication appeared in the journal “Economy of Region” with an econometric analysis of the factors of high-tech exports in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS,” Anna specified.
After entering the Master's program, Anna began to engage in science even more actively under the guidance of a foreign professor of GSEM, Kazi Sohag. The result was an article in the Turkish journal Borsa Istanbul Review (Scopus, WoS, IF = 3.348, Q1 JCR).
“I think that good knowledge of English, skills in mathematical statistics and econometrics, as well as motivation to learn new things helped me to prove myself. We started working on a study on the impact of economic policy uncertainty on the ruble exchange rate, and subsequently it was published in the journal of the first quartile,” Anna concluded her story.
Another second-year student of the Master's program "Applied and International Economics" Sofia Turkanova published an article based on her bachelor's thesis under the supervision of of Oleg Mariev in the Polish journal “Equilibrium”. Quarterly Journal of Economics and Economic Policy (Scopus, WoS).
“The paper explored the environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis about the non-linear impact of economic growth and inequality on environmental performance, in particular, carbon dioxide pollution. We confirmed it, and we also concluded that a high income gap between the richest and poorest segments of the population leads to an increase in air pollution. In 2020, the work was presented at a conference in Slovakia, received positive feedback from the organizers and was proposed by them for publication in a journal,” Sofia said.
A graduate of the Master's program " Research and Analytics in Public Administration" Natalya Blednova is now a postgraduate student at GSEM and is actively publishing her research works. Moreover, she published her first article in international journals in the journal “Woman in Russian Society” (Scopus).
"I was engaged in the problems of employment of the population during my bachelor studies. In the master's program, my supervisor Anna Bagirova and I decided to combine the spheres of our research interests – this is how the topic of combining family and work was born. More than 15 scientific articles have been written during our work. Theoretical and empirical studies have shown that employees with children have difficulties in combining two vital areas - family and work. These difficulties can be caused by both objective (for example, an inconvenient work schedule) and subjective factors (for example, stereotypical representations of employers about the low efficiency of workers with children in the labor market and their discrimination on this basis)," Natalia said.
Anastasia Faizova, a first-year student of the Master's program “Applied and International Economics”, participated in writing an article for the journal “Perspectives of Science and Education” (Scopus).
“The article is aimed at identifying the main features of the transformation of forms of communication in distance learning at the university. My task was to compile a questionnaire and organize a survey of 2nd-4th year students of UrFU, as well as analyze the results. Among other things, we found that in the 2020-21 academic year, students were able to adapt to the online format, but at the same time, half of the students surveyed prefer offline, 39% of students prefer the mixed format,” Anastasia said.
Ksenia Posysoeva, a graduate of bachelor's program “Applied Economics and Finance”, also took the opportunity to publish an article on the results of her bachelor's thesis, even though she is no longer a university student. The article was published in Economics of the Region (Scopus, WoS, Q1 SNIP).
“I wrote the first article in the journal from the VAK list in my fourth year and I really regret that I didn’t think about publications earlier. After defending my thesis, I really wanted to publish its results in a good journal, with which my supervisor Svetlana Doroshenko helped me. Our article is devoted to the analysis of factors that influence the development of the border regions of the Russian Federation. Border regions were divided into two groups, regions with "old" borders and regions with "new" (after 1991) borders. The results were as follows: transport infrastructure and tourism have a greater impact on the development of the "new" border regions of Russia. And foreign trade, the ecological situation and small business turned out to be more significant in the models of the “old” border regions,” Ksenia said.
It is worth noting the students who published most actively in conference proceedings in 2021. Three publications at once indexed in Scopus/WoS were published by a fourth-year student of the bachelor's program " Industrial Management and Investment and Construction Business" Daria Shalina, as well as by first-year students of the master's program " Management of Territories and Real Estate Development " Ekaterina Kubina and Marina Bareycheva.
We wish all students and graduates of GSEM not to stop at the achieved, to engage in science, to publish more and more often in high-quality journals!
