Laboratory for International and Regional Economics and GSEM UrFU held a workshop as part of the "Spring Research Days "
Kazi Sohag (PhD in Economics), Head of the Laboratory of International and Regional Economics, delivered a welcoming speech and presented his recent work on the impact of anti-corruption structures on governance. Kazi Sohag's research found that anti-corruption bodies are somewhat ineffective in improving institutional quality, as they do not operate freely without political influence. Shujaat Abbas (PhD in Economics), a Postdoc at the Laboratory, has shown that international tourism revenues increase domestic investment in South Asia. Amin Sokhanvar (PhD in Economics), Research Fellow, emphasized the positive role of foreign investment in boosting the domestic productivity of fast-growing companies. Faheem Ur Rehman (PhD in Economics), a Postdoc at the Laboratory, emphasized the importance of transport infrastructure in stimulating export sophistication and diversification in G-20 countries.
Rogneda Vasilyeva, GSEM junior researcher, showed the importance of fiscal decentralization in Russia for reducing the disparity in economic development between Russian regions. In particular, the results of the study showed that the characteristics of the governor of the region have an impact on fiscal decentralization. Md Monirul Islam, PhD student, highlighted the problems and prospects of transition to clean energy and spoke about the factors affecting the demand for mineral resources. Mohammed Shakib, PhD student, explained the relationship between the development of innovations and the provision of loans in conditions of high and low investment risk and the potential of Russian regions. Suleiman Onimisi Mamman, PhD student, explained the challenges of freelancers operating in the global marketplace in the context of India. Badur Mesut, PhD student, talked about how the quality of institutions reduces income inequality in the CIS countries.
Zarnigor Juraeva, PhD student, presented her recent research showing that the coronavirus hype affects stock market fluctuations to a greater extent than the coronavirus itself. Alexander Zykov, PhD student, explained the factors affecting oil prices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ullah Mir Zat, PhD student , explained how social media posts affect the Russian bitcoin market both in the short and long term. Anna Gainetdinova, MSc in Applied and International Economics, explained the importance of forest conservation for carbon sequestration and environmental improvement. Anna stressed that forest conservation policies, along with institutional quality improvements, can protect forests from illegal logging in the context of Russian regions. Finally, Yulia Safonova, student in the “Applied Economics and Finance”, talked about why high geopolitical risks make investors consider investing in green stocks.
The successful holding of the workshop "Spring Day of Applied Macroeconomic Research" created an excellent platform for the dissemination of knowledge and inspired the members of the Laboratory to further organize seminars.
