Alumni of the IEB published a study in a prestigious publication
Shortly before defending their diplomas, students of the bachelor’s programme "International Economics and Business" Valentin Shtun, Veronika Sapogova and Gleb Vakhrushev, under the guidance of Shujaat Abbas, a researcher at the Laboratory of International and Regional Economics, published an article "Russian global export flow and potential: evidence from augmented gravity model" in International Journal of Emerging Markets (ABDC: B; Q2 JCR IF; Q2 SJR), Emerald.
“This is not the first article of this level with the participation of students from GSEM UrFU; the most striking articles with the participation of students in 2021 and 2022 have already been described earlier on the School's website. But this article is different in that three of the four authors of the article are students at once. The journal where it was published has high scientometric indicators and peer reviews. Even for “adult” researchers in economics, such articles are very rare,” said Dmitry Gladyrev, Director of GSEM Center for research support of GSEM UrFU.
The authors of the article spoke about their research.
"In our article, we tried to analyze the directions and volumes of international trade flows of the Russian Federation in order to find out possible directions of export diversification. To do this, we modeled theoretical export volumes using a gravity model, which assumes a direct dependence of the export flow on the size of the GDP of trading partners and the reverse - on the distance between countries. Based on data from 2000 to 2020 and econometric methods POLS and GLS, we modeled theoretical flows and compared them with actual ones, so it became possible to see the magnitude of the potential for increasing trade levels with a certain country: if theoretical exports exceed actual ones, there is a potential for expanding cooperation and vice versa. Thus, the results show which countries can be paid attention to for the purposes of diversification of foreign trade," Valentin Shtun noted.
"During the work on the study, we maintained constant interaction with Professor Abbas, meeting in person and holding online conferences through Zoom. We have effectively distributed the responsibilities of writing the chapters of the article, periodically changing our areas of responsibility. After submitting the article for review, a considerable time has passed, and we were asked to update the study in the light of new developments. We quickly, working as a team, coped with this task, and our article was successfully published. In total, it took us almost a year to publish in this magazine, but it was certainly worth the effort! We are very proud of the result," Veronika Sapogova said.
"The idea to publish our article in the International Journal of Emerging Markets arose for several reasons. Firstly, this journal is an authoritative publication in the field of emerging market research and has good indicators in the Scopus database. Publication in such a journal will help to increase the visibility and significance of our research for the scientific community. Secondly, the area of interest of the International Journal of Emerging Markets fully corresponds to the content of our article. We investigated the directions and volumes of international trade of the Russian Federation in order to identify possible areas of export diversification. This analysis relates to the field of emerging markets and economic transformations. The journal purposefully supports research on emerging markets and works comparing emerging markets with developed ones, which is perfectly combined with our research," said Gleb Vakhrushev.
We congratulate our graduates on their outstanding achievement and wish them new scientific success in the master's program!
