Most of the articles were published in publications related to Q1-Q2 according to IF JCR or SNIP
For the third year in a row, we are monitoring publications in leading Russian and foreign journals with the participation of GSEM students. In 2023, eight students of the School, who participated in writing seven articles, achieved similar achievements.
“For five semesters in a row, students of the School have been leading the UrFU in the number of recipients of increased scholarships for achievements in research activities. But another important characteristic of the institute’s youth science is that many students move from participating in GSEM conferences and publications in conference proceedings to joint research work with leading GSEM researchers and publishing their results in the best Russian and international journals,” said the Director of GSEM Center for research support of GSEM UrFU Dmitry Gladyrev.
A 2023 graduate of the master's degree program "Applied and International Economics" Irina Kalina, now a PhD student at the School, co-authored articles in Energy Economics (A*, IF = 12.8; Q1 IF JCR; Q1 SNIP) and Resources Policy (B, IF = 10.2; Q1 IF JCR; Q1 SNIP).
“I started working with Prof. Kazi Sohag in my first year of my master's degree. My knowledge of English, mathematical statistics and econometrics helped me establish myself. The first article, also written with Oleg Mariev, considers the impact of oil market shocks and financial shocks on Russia's National Welfare Fund. The second article examines the impact of the same shocks, but on the level of financial stress in Russia. It was this work that formed the basis of my master's thesis. This study focused specifically on the dynamic response of financial stress during periods of severe oil market turmoil. The results showed that in 2022, the impact of oil price shocks increased only for a short time after February 24, but this effect was weaker when compared with the events of 2014,” said Irina.
Another 2023 graduate of the master’s program in Applied and International Economics, Yulia Sokolova, co-authored an article in Resources Policy (B, IF = 10.2; Q1 IF JCR; Q1 SNIP).
“It is known that the global energy transition process relies heavily on the use of metals, the prices of which are extremely volatile, which affects the effectiveness of green projects. Together with Prof. Kazi Sohag, we studied the ability of green financial instruments to hedge risks in metals markets. We have found that in the long term, green stocks and bonds are an effective tool for accumulating funds for the implementation of projects to achieve carbon neutrality in the world. My role in writing the article was to collect statistical data, develop an empirical model, interpret econometric results and prepare the text,” shared Yulia.
Second-year student of the Master's program "Applied and International Economics" Ilya Zverev co-authored an article in the Journal of Sports Economics (B; IF = 1.7; Q3 IF JCR; Q1 SNIP).
“I am closely associated with sports, which is why I chose an analysis of the impact of sports mega-events on tourist flows as the topic of my bachelor’s thesis. As part of the study, I processed data provided by UNWTO and identified the determinants of tourism flows in gravity models. My supervisor, Igor Drapkin, suggested publishing the research in a good international journal after the defense. Ivan Savin also made a significant contribution to improving the research. As the results showed, there is not always a positive effect from holding sports mega-events. Considering sports mega-events from 1995 to 2019, we were able to discover that in some cases there is a “substitution” effect, when the flow of tourists from sports mega-events displaces the country’s regular tourists,” said Ilya.
There was even a separate piece of news about another article with the participation of students. It is notable for the fact that its authors are three graduates of the bachelor’s program “International Economics and Business”: Valentin Shtun, Veronika Sapogova and Gleb Vakhrushev. Under the leadership of Shujaat Abbas, they were published in the International Journal of Emerging Markets (B; IF = 2.7; Q2 IF JCR; Q2 SNIP).
“In our article, we tried to analyze the directions and volumes of international trade flows in the Russian Federation in order to find out possible directions for export diversification. To do this, we simulated theoretical export volumes using a gravity model, which assumes a direct dependence of the export flow on the size of the GDP of trading partners and an inverse dependence on the distance between countries. Based on data from 2000 to 2020 and econometric methods POLS and GLS, we modeled theoretical flows and compared them with actual ones, thus it became possible to see the magnitude of the potential for increasing trade levels with a certain country: if theoretical exports exceed actual ones, there is potential for increased cooperation and vice versa. Thus, the results show which countries can be considered for the purpose of diversifying foreign trade," said Valentin Shtun, one of the authors of the study.
Second-year student of the Master's program "Applied and International Economics" Daria Ampenova co-authored an article in R-Economy (Scopus).
"The article is an extension and continuation of the research conducted within the framework of the Bachelor's thesis. Together with my supervisor Rogneda Vasilyeva, we studied the impact of social spending and interregional migration on the level of employment in the regions of Russia. We conclude that current trends in interregional migration demonstrate a decline in the effectiveness of stimulating regional employment. Social policy, according to our results, generally contributes to increased employment in most regions. For me, this was my first experience of publishing in an international magazine, but the process went quite quickly and successfully,” said Daria.
Nikita Larchenko, a second-year student of the Master's program in International Management, co-authored an article in the journal Corporate Finance (Scopus, WoS ESCI).
“In my article, I examined the influence of various factors on mergers and acquisitions in developing Asian countries. It was written based on my bachelor's thesis: after the defense, the idea arose to share the results and publish the research. The participation of my supervisor Lyudmila Ruzhanskaya was very valuable. As for the work itself, I have always been interested in Asian markets, and so the question arose: how do the cultural characteristics of the region affect transactions in it? While writing the article, I realized how exciting this activity is, especially if you choose a topic that is interesting and combined with your interests,” said Nikita.
Also, many students have published in conference proceedings indexed in international databases. Among them are Daria Shalina, Elizaveta Semenova, Daria Amelicheva, Artem Burmich, Ekaterina Nalimova and Yulia Koryukova.
