I found out about the "Semester abroad" program by chance from my classmates and immediately realized that this chance should not be missed. In order to get into the program, you need to choose the country, confirm your motivation, study well and know English.
I chose Slovenia for many reasons: a convenient location in the center of Europe, between the Alps and the sea coast, a small and clean city, a suitable curriculum.
When the letter of acceptance from the host university arrived, my joy knew no bounds. It remained to complete a number of formalities: arrange a study trip, obtain a visa and buy tickets.
When I arrived in Maribor, it turned out that I was the only exchange student from Russia. I was waiting for four months of continuous practice of the English language and meeting people from all over the world.
I arrived a few days before the start of my studies and settled in a hostel. There were already a lot of students there, so I didn't have to be bored. On the very first day, I met my neighbors from India and local Slavic students. I've never lived in a dorm before, but it was definitely worth trying on an internship. Yes, a little less comfort than in your own apartment, but how much more fun moments! At any time, you could go to the kitchen and talk with guys from 28 European countries, as well as Turkey, Brazil, India.
I came not just to another country, but to a large international community with its own unique atmosphere: joint entertainment, exchange of opinions and ideas. Communication with people from different countries is a valuable experience that cannot be obtained while staying at home.
The schedule was organized in such a way that there was quite a lot of time for travel and entertainment. But the exams had to be prepared and passed to the fullest extent. The curriculum provided the opportunity to choose courses according to interests. More time was devoted to independent work and home projects than to class work. At the lectures, the lecturers focused on the practical application of the studied courses to real business problems. It made learning more interesting.
Slovenia is located in central Europe, so from there you can conveniently travel in all directions. During the semester I visited Croatia and Hungary, went snowboarding in the Austrian Alps and tried myself as a school teacher in Italy.
Semester abroad is, without a doubt, the best experience I have got in 4 years of student life. It allowed me to broaden my horizons, significantly improve my knowledge of English and make new friends around the world.
